Calm academic setting symbolising thoughtful psychological reflection

About JOAAL – Journal of Applied Awareness & Life

JOAAL is a practice-oriented platform that brings psychological research, lived experience, and community knowledge into everyday conversations about stress and mental health.

Who We Are

JOAAL grew from a simple observation: many people encounter mental health information at moments of crisis, when they are already exhausted. We wanted to build a calmer, slower space where people can explore topics like stress, trauma, resilience, and recovery before, during, and after difficult times.

Our contributors include practitioners from psychology, counselling, education, public health, and community work, as well as people with direct lived experience of mental health challenges. We design content in conversation with these communities rather than speaking “about” them from a distance.

Our Mission

Our mission is to increase applied awareness – the kind of understanding that changes how people relate to themselves, to each other, and to the systems around them. We focus particularly on:

  • Stress awareness that is honest but not alarmist
  • Mental wellbeing practices that respect people’s circumstances
  • Psychological education that is grounded, accessible, and culturally aware
  • Community mental health approaches that share power and build trust

How We Work

We follow an editorial process that balances accuracy, readability, and emotional safety. Draft pieces are reviewed by practitioners and people with relevant lived experience. We look carefully at language, tone, and the potential impact of examples.

Stages in our editorial process

  1. Scoping – clarifying purpose, audience, and potential risks.
  2. Drafting – producing content in plain, respectful language.
  3. Practitioner review – checking accuracy and practical relevance.
  4. Lived experience review – asking, “Does this feel humane and useful?”
  5. Accessibility review – considering readability, structure, and signposting.
“We are not here to replace professional care or crisis services. Our role is to support understanding, reflection, and connection around mental health.”

Collaboration and Community

JOAAL is intentionally collaborative. We are interested in hearing from practitioners, educators, community organisers, and individuals who see gaps in current mental health conversations – especially those who feel under-represented in mainstream narratives.

We are particularly keen to connect with:

  • Community mental health projects and peer support groups
  • Workplaces seeking to embed humane stress management
  • Researchers wanting to share applied insights beyond academic journals
  • People with lived experience who wish to co-create resources
